At Level 4, we ask trainees to choose. Most teachers of English, in the course of a career, will end up specialising — whether by accident (the first job offer you accept) or by design. The Specialised Pathways course exists to make that specialisation deliberate, trained, and documentable.
Trainees elect two of three streams. Each elected stream is taught in a cohort of no more than twelve, by the senior tutor responsible for that specialism. The Integration seminar — the course's distinctive element — is delivered by all three stream leaders together and is often, we are told, the most demanding and most clarifying fortnight of a Hanseo trainee's time with us.
A single week revisiting the Level 3 framework, recalibrated for specialised contexts.
Needs analysis in corporate settings. Teaching executives. Meetings, presentations, negotiation language.
The cognitive, emotional and linguistic differences of learners aged 6–12. Rooms, routines, and the craft of engagement.
IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT and TOEIC. The structure of each test and the teaching decisions each demands.
A fortnight of cross-stream work: how the specialised skills of your two chosen streams interlock with your general practice.
Six hours of observed teaching within each chosen stream, plus a 3,000-word reflective portfolio.
The Hanseo Certificate in Specialised English Language Teaching, with stream endorsements, mapped to TICA Level 4 equivalence. Suitable for promotion to Senior Teacher, Academic Coordinator or equivalent positions, and accepted as the second component of our Level 5 Diploma for trainees pursuing the full pathway.
