Level 3 advanced methodology lecture

Level 3 is the course we most often describe as the fork in the road. Up to this point, our curriculum has focused on what a teacher must do. From this point, it focuses on why, and on how to know when you are wrong. Trainees who complete Level 3 and do nothing further are, in our view, the minimum of a professional teacher. Trainees who go on to Levels 4 and 5 are beginning something we would call a career.

The eight-week programme introduces the central theoretical framework of second language acquisition and translates it, week by week, into classroom decisions. It also trebles the volume of observed teaching practice relative to Level 2. The work is rigorous. We do not apologise for this.

Prerequisites

The modules

  1. Second Language Acquisition

The core theory — Krashen, Long, Swain, VanPatten — and why each still matters to your Thursday afternoon lesson.

    18 hours
  2. Task-based language teaching

TBLT in full, not the caricature. Designing tasks that produce language rather than requiring it as a prerequisite.

    16 hours
  3. Dogme and unplugged teaching

Conversation-driven instruction, its demands on the teacher, and its honest limitations.

    10 hours
  4. Phonology for teachers

Not phonetics. The pronunciation features that actually impede communication, and the twelve drills worth using.

    18 hours
  5. Differentiated instruction

Teaching the mixed-ability class. Scaffolding, challenge, and the withdrawal of support over time.

    16 hours
  6. Materials evaluation and design

Which coursebook. Which unit. Which task. Why. A workshop across eight current publications.

    22 hours
  7. Observed teaching

Eight hours of observed practice across three different learner profiles, each with extended debrief.

    40 hours

On completion

The Hanseo Advanced Certificate in English Language Teaching Methodology, mapped to TICA Level 4 equivalence. This qualification is accepted in lieu of a recognised 120-hour TEFL certificate by a growing number of international employers and is the minimum qualification required for our Level 4 or Level 5 offerings.
