Level 2 intermediate classroom

Level 2 assumes you have either completed our Foundation course or have six months of consistent teaching experience behind you. If neither applies, we will ask you to interview before enrolling; often a trainee arrives believing themselves ready for Level 2 and leaves that conversation, gratefully, enrolled in Level 1.

The Intermediate level is the first course at which trainees are expected to plan, deliver and reflect upon their own lessons as a matter of routine. The centrepiece of the course is the six-hour observed practicum, conducted with volunteer learners drawn from our a rotating pool of volunteer online learners from across East and Southeast Asia. Most trainees describe the practicum week as the first time they felt like a teacher. We think that is correct.

Prerequisites

The modules

  1. Planning the four skills

Reading, listening, speaking and writing as distinct pedagogical objects. When to integrate, when to isolate.

    16 hours
  2. The lesson plan as a working document

Writing plans that survive contact with learners. Aims, sub-aims, anticipated difficulties, and the plan B.

    14 hours
  3. Learner error and correction

A typology of error. When to correct. How to correct without breaking the thread. Written feedback that learners actually read.

    14 hours
  4. Classroom management

The micro-discipline of pairing, grouping, seating, and transitions. The macro-discipline of pace and engagement.

    18 hours
  5. Assessment and feedback

Formative versus summative. Rubrics that work. The difference between marking and teaching.

    12 hours
  6. Teaching practicum

Six hours of observed teaching with real learners, each followed by a forty-minute debrief.

    26 hours
